Katrina-ethics in question!
When an event of this magnitude occurs, we tend to get into some self-introspection mode and think of our role in the whole tragedy.Of course, there is always a triumph of human spirit whenever such difficult times surround mankind. But then, it is so each to sip a cup of hot coffee, read paper or watch tv, comment on how tragic the event is and then move on with life..Lets face it, 90% of us do that..I mean, honestly, is our day-to-day life interrupted anyhow?Unless of course, we have been the real victims. Then arises the question of ethics, the choice-should we pause and extend our help, in whatever way we can, to the needy or should we just feel sorry, discuss its gravity with our friends and colleagues and move on with life??Well, I know there are some who would go that extra mile, take a pause, make a difference, by contributing in whatever way they can..afterall, these are everyday heroes, whose contribution may go unnoticed, but they will die with a feeling of fulfillment and contention.
Hence, as I am juggling with the everyday hassles, caught in dilemma of giving up my time at home and office, and go to volunteer in the blood camp, for katrina, the inner voice in me is shouting that I should do what is right for me..No matter how much my brain logically tries to justify, that there will be no difference if they dint get an ounce of blood bottle, from one donor!!Life throws situations sometimes, which are so taxing!!
While our character is tested in such times, I think our conscience, determination and goodness is put more on focus...Common, after all, the victims will still be rescued and helped by other divinely souls!!
Its time I pen off and get ready to go to the blood camp, meanwhile the bad voice in me has already subsided by the voice of my conscience!!Do the right thing!!
